Authorties are urging people to be prepared for Mother Nature's next round of snow and below zero temps.

LaPorte County and near Michigan City reported white-out conditions on the Toll Road Tuesday morning while other counties saying the roads are "a mess" in some less traveled areas.

A small system of snow is moving through the area to be followed by more snow and extreme cold. Areas along the lake are experiencing higher wind gusts and snow fall early Tuesday morning.

Freezing drizzle may have helped in the over all blowing snow expected for later on Tuesday and Wednesday as it packed it down - less likely to blow around.

Police are urging motorists to take it slowly - especially on the side roads. Stay with NewsCenter 16 for the very latest on this new winter blast.

Home school your children, then you won't have anyone to complain about but yourselves. Believe it or not, school districts have only the best in mind for the students. They hold school because they know some 5 and 6 year olds WILL be left home alone, perhaps without breakfast and lunch, or even a warm place to stay. THAT is thinking of the safety of the child.

so go out and buy a gas-guzzeling SUV to pollute! Yes! I am! Also, please throw all you garbage out the window to aid the global warming process. This world is a dump anyway.

Hey, I am not from your area; I live in Wisconsin... This week has brought us sub-zero temperatures and the local school district has cancelled two days of school because of it. I feel for those of you who live where the school does not take your child's safety into consideration when deciding whether or not to hold school. After reading some of these posts, I have to admit that I think some of you are mis-interpreting the messages left by others. I think the attacks on one another are not necessary.

mom of 2 kids in SBCSC- my daughter also goes to Kennedy and they will not kick them out for missing a day because of the weather. Just like they are not marked late if their bus shows up late because of the weather. They would rather the kids be safe than never show up again. Yes, they don't like the kids to be excessively absent or late, but that is with EVERY school, not just Kennedy. IF you feel it is not safe, stand up for your children instead of standing behind excusses!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 14, 2009 at 03:22 PM
um, since when is it a crime to complain about the weather or the schools?! Helllooo. Its NORMAL for people to complain about bad weather. What aint normal is to actually email and complain about the people who are complaining. Some of you need to talk to a doctor. I bet you dont have kids and if you do I feel for them.

Posted by: a mom on Jan 14, 2009 at 03:11 PM
To: mom of 2 kids: For the record, I do not agree with ANY school giving the student anything negative on days like this if they do not come. I would fight that with the school board, and I bet you would not be alone. All I am trying to say is that no parent should put their child in harms way and then say...ok, I'll send them so they don't get an absence and then say I'll sue if something happens. God forbid something happens. It's like the McDonalds law suit...order coffee you know is hot, YOU spill it on yourself and then sue McDonalds for hot coffee. I would gladly take the absence (fight it maybe) and know my kid is safe. As a mother, I can't imagine someone actually doing what you and "law suit" person suggested....it is mind boggeling.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 14, 2009 at 03:02 PM
I have called into my school once this year to say that my kids may or may not make it in since I did not think it safe enough because of the weather that morning. They were all excused for the day. Guess you could always lie and say they were sick if your that worried about getting an unexcused.

Posted by: a mom on Jan 14, 2009 at 02:01 PM
TO; mom of 2 kids in SBCSC: Just so I understand correctly....you would still send your child to school even though you feel it is unsafe just so your child doesn't get an unexcused absence?? Somehow I sincerely doubt that Kennedy or any other school for that matter would "kick out" your child for an unexcused absence. Tell them your kid is sick...is that also unexcused? Tell them ANYTHING if you think the conditions are bad. But to have someone say they will file a LAW SUIT because the PARENT chose to send the kid to school versus an absent it the stupidest thing I have ever heard. No, I don't walk on water, but I can tell you that if I felt that strongly over an issue with my kid...no way would an unexcused or excused absence be worth the safety of my child. I have 2 kids in school, so I am not talking about something I know nothing about. You can't be serious.....

Posted by: N on Jan 14, 2009 at 01:30 PM
To mom of 2 kids: I walked on water earlier today. Done it most of this winter too. Pretty easy to do when it never gets above freezing anymore!

Posted by: mom on Jan 14, 2009 at 10:40 AM
And why even make up for snow days at the end of the school year?! Those last few days are always just a bunch of silly pic nics or helping the teacher clean her chalk board days. USELESS!!

Posted by: Mom of 2 kids in SBCSC on Jan 14, 2009 at 10:19 AM
Posted by: a mom on Jan 13, 2009 at 12:37 PM Hey "LAW SUIT" you have the OPTION of keeping your kids home. People like you make me sick...scream law suit instead of using your own brain. Good grief....grow up. Okay do you realize that if you keep children Home from school "just because the weather is bad" it will not be excused.... my daughter goes to Kennedy Academy... unexcused absences are a unacceptable so it's either send my child to school or risk having them kicked out out the best public school in SBCSC..... of course you probably wouldn't understand that. Before you judge someone, TRY WALKING ON WATER, No one is perfect.

Is it really necessary for semi drivers to think they can drive 70 no matter what????

Posted by: Cassie Location: Mishawaka on Jan 13, 2009 at 11:58 PM
Mclovin is right. To the person that said take the bus...Mishawaka doesn't have buses. We have to take public transportation and wait out in this weather for them to show up...if they show up. It's stupid. Mishawaka will never have delays because our superintendent is ignorant. I saw a tree come down at school today. It was crazy!

Who cares if someone's grammer and spelling aren't correct..seriously does the news comment section need a spelling cop. Ugh snow days brings out the idiots..onto the computers!

I have to be in South Bend (job related)several times a year and I really hate this place. How can anyone take this weather year after year!!!!!!

Posted by: Matt Location: South Bend on Jan 13, 2009 at 03:56 PM
Taking it slow on the side roads isn't the problem. It's all the people that think they can drive like maniacs on the four lane roads like parts of Lincolnway and Cleveland that cause the really dangerous accidents.

Posted by: Jan on Jan 13, 2009 at 03:48 PM
The schools having 3 built in snow days is better than what my kids had when they were in school. Until they were in Junior High the school calendar didn't have snow days because we'd had such mild winters they weren't used. I always thought that was rather silly considering winter here can be brutal at times. Finally when parents started complaining that their summer plans were being affected by having to make up snow days they added them back into the calendar. I'm sure the schools figure the odds it will get worse when they make their decision whether to have school or not. A weather forecast is a 50/50 thing...it might get worse, it might not. They figure the forecast is seldom correct so they would rather hold school than use a precious snow day.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 13, 2009 at 03:13 PM
If schools not cancelled and the weather is bad its the schools fault! I would much rather have make up days the risk injury.

BOO FREAKIN HOO! get over it. if you dont want your kids in school, then keep them at home. no one wants to hear your sob stories about the roads being terrible! ahaha

Posted by: Mz V Location: Benton Harbor on Jan 13, 2009 at 03:08 PM
Linda from Warsaw, you say slow down and you will not have any problems. It's not always you that causes the problems there are other drivers out there also. LOVING PARENT you should change your name. What type of parent would want their child's life taken or even hurt by stupidity. If you see the commission on the news the night before talking about declaring this weather to be the worst. How stupid can you be. You must be on of those parents that send your children to school so you can watch the soaps and stay in the computer all afternoon. A MOM you need to read a little closer. IF YOU KEEP your CHILDREN HOME because of the weather the school will not excuse them and after so many absents your childs grade goes down. Since you are good at correcting someones spelling when it was just a mistake.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 13, 2009 at 03:07 PM
no, my child shouldnt miss a lesson or test if I keep him home just because all the stupid parents want to go ahead and send thiers.

"Freezing drizzle may have helped in the over all blowing snow expected for later on Tuesday and Wednesday as it packed it down - less likely to blow around." What exactly are you trying to say there?

Posted by: davesangelwife Location: sawyer, mi on Jan 13, 2009 at 02:39 PM
i kept my children home from school today because i didnt want to risk their lives out on the roads. as a parent, if i feel it is unsafe to be on the roads, then my children will be staying home with me!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 13, 2009 at 02:36 PM
This is Michigan, you would think that the schools would allow more than 3 snow days.

Posted by: Pam Location: Granger on Jan 13, 2009 at 02:31 PM
Hopefully they will cancel all after school activities at all the schools today

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 13, 2009 at 02:19 PM
"ill sue! ill sue! ill sue!" nice attitude. like loving parent said, disgusting! if you really feel it is that unsafe then keep your kid home. you're the parent, not the school system.

Posted by: Colina Location: Elkhart on Jan 13, 2009 at 02:16 PM
"I WILL FILE A LAWSUIT"... HahA...File a lawsuit because YOU sent YOUR children to school in bad weather? That cracks me up! You have the final say!

Posted by: South Bend on Jan 13, 2009 at 02:04 PM
To Greg, Jen, and Judy, Thanks for your two cents regarding our weather! The next time a natural disaster strikes where you live, please don't ask us for any help!

Mistress...you need to be in school to learn to spell!!

Posted by: bob Location: goshen on Jan 13, 2009 at 01:31 PM
it is getting rough out there right now but we will deal with it as always. as to diane wanting to get snowed in i was snowed out in the blizzard of 78 and that was no fun. i think they close the schools to quickly anymore if you can get there do it and if not stay home just don't run the school buses and let the parents decide then threat of law suits is gone.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 13, 2009 at 01:28 PM
boo hoo we all made it to work so what makes you think it isnt safe for your kids to go to school? if we called in every time we had a snow storm we would all lose our jobs, so why is it any different for kids in school? work is work, you know darn well if they was home they would all be outside sledding, skiing or something outside anyway like we all did when we was young...

Posted by: Grammar Location: School on Jan 13, 2009 at 01:25 PM

whats to enjoy about snow and cold temps? bring on global warming!!

Posted by: tuesday Location: Saint Joe County on Jan 13, 2009 at 12:46 PM
The school corporations are more than likely saving their snow days. With the blizzard watch and temperatures rapidly falling this week, more schools will be closing. I recently drove on the bypass from CR 17 to the Mayflower Exit. Certain parts of the road were clear, although wet. Other sections were snow covered and slick. Use extreme caution. Leave plently of space between you and the car in front of you. Expect white out conditions.

Posted by: Ann on Jan 13, 2009 at 12:44 PM
I did not feel comfortable allowing my child to drive to school today, however I had no choice. The Wanee School system once again refused to give their students a 2 hour delay to allow the road crews to clear some of the snow. It is obvious from Wanee's record that the administration cares more about the costs of running a schoool than the safety of their students.

They don't have time to think of children's safety...they are too worried about beating the next school district with test scores! They are so busy shoving more and more of these "lets keep up with the rest of the country" tests in our kids' faces, they don't care about their safety anymore...schools USED to be all about the kids!

soooo, some of the schools are closing now at noon and the ones that were delayed are just now heading into school at around 10:30 ???? Those schools supers. are IDIOTS! Police are saying that trucks are flipping over and there are several accidents yet our children are all out there on school busses (without seatbelts.) Real smart.

Posted by: mother to 2 children in school Location: SB, IN on Jan 13, 2009 at 10:07 AM
If my children are hurt, either at school or on their way home from school, I WILL be filing a Law Suit!! You know just because it's not "that bad" in the city don't mean that it is not bad in the county.... but if you keep your kids home from school because of the weather, SBCSC will not excuse it, b/c they deemed it safe to be in school! Last year when we had bad weather my daughters bus was involved in an accident, luckily no one on the bus was injured! This year SBCSC again made a BAD judgment call, but this year if one of my children get hurt because of it I WILL FILE A LAW SUIT!!

Posted by: algore on Jan 13, 2009 at 10:03 AM

Posted by: Anonymous Location: South Bend on Jan 13, 2009 at 09:46 AM
I totally agree with anonymous at 7:05 AM. The supers never take heed to what is forcasted and this is what happens. They put not only students lives in danger, but the bus drivers and staff. When will they ever learn? Our school is rural and there is no protection from the wind and blowing snow. The roads are already drifting shut. I just wish more common sense was used. And to Greg in Palm Harbor, not all of us can afford to move.
