The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is defending $150,000 worth of new bathrooms and carpeting at three of its branches as state workers face a pay freeze.
Some lawmakers and union leaders say the expenditures were poorly timed since they came as the state is facing a tight budget because the recession has led to lower than projected revenues.
BMV spokesman Dennis Rosebrough says the money was well spent in an effort to improve customer service. He says the renovations were made as leases expired at the branches and that the agency would be paying $15,000 a year for the latest work over the 10-year term of the new leases.
The agency has had $1.7 million in renovations done over the past two years to upgrade 35 of its 140 branches.
The branches that got upgrades last month are in Brownsburg, Lebanon and Sullivan.
