Hundreds gathered at the Westside Democratic Club in South Bend to watch the results come in Tuesday night, and the tears flowed freely when word came of Obama’s win.

A funny thing happened while Obama supporters in South Bend were waiting to find out if their candidate had won Indiana; they found out, he didn’t need to in order to win the presidency.

“I can’t even, I can’t even tell you what I feel right now; I’m so overjoyed, I really am,” said Diana Szilagyi, of South Bend.

“It is a great day, it is a great day in America,” said Al Levy, also of South Bend.

A great day that, for some, brought back memories of other days. Annette Dungey was one of only three people who attended the original meeting of “Yes We Can – Michiana” back in January.

“I couldn’t help but shed a tear. I’ve been through struggles, we couldn’t even eat a hamburger inside at Hill’s Snappy Hamburger in downtown South Bend, and I walked in the marches back then. The whole thing of it is, this is a man of God. It has to be part of a divine plan,” said Dungey.

For some, winning the presidency was enough, and winning Indiana no longer mattered. Still, others longed for some icing on that cake.

“It’s kind of like ‘V for Vendetta,’ but it would be like that affirmation of all the hard work that’s gone into what’s hopefully going to be a blue state,” said Mark Smith, of Bourbon.
