It has been an "in-your-face" race for president in the South Bend area…and it continues Wednesday night.

That's when the locals come face to face with Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama.

A rally is planned at South Bend Washington High School for 10 p.m..

The school gym will seat about 3,000 people.

Tuesday, it became clear rather quickly, that won’t be enough.

Scoring tickets to Senator Obama’s South Bend rally was easier for some than others.

DiAnne Taylor-Cook works in an office that is in the same building, and right across the hall from the South Bend Obama campaign office.

“I got permission to leave work and go down there and get my tickets,” said Taylor-Cook while clutching a pair of passes to the rally.

Volunteers who distributed the tickets said they ran out in about 40-minutes time.

“Its history for South Bend, you know amongst all the controversy that's on line right now, it's good history for South Bend,” said campaign volunteer Oliver Jackson of South Bend.

In an attempt to make sure the visit was seen in a good light, maintenance crews today were checking the light bulbs in the Washington High School parking lot.

It’s sure to be dark at the conclusion of a political rally that starts at 10 p.m. Wednesday.

“I was really surprised at that time,” said South Bend School Board President Sheila Bergeron. “I never heard of a rally starting that late, but they must know what they're doing.”

“My whole thing was for the kids,” School Board Member William Sniadecki said of the late start, “Now how is that going to involve our kids and how many is going to be able to come out.”

While the timing and location of the visit has stirred some controversy, some prefer to stay focused on the big picture.

It’s been 40 years since local residents had the chance to complain about the details of a presidential campaign visit.

“Personally, I think its cool that he's coming to Washington, but that he's in town, that he's in our community, that the party his campaign feels its important and necessary to come to our community,” said Obama supporter Lynn Coleman, “for me that's exciting.”

Pilsner, I keep seeing Fred post and asking you what Obama is going to do. Fred is right, you don't know, do you?

Take off Sharon. Obama will win the democratic candidacy. It's was past due for Hillary to quit and get behind Obama. Obama has the right leadership qualities and experience to take this country in the much needed newer directions. Hillary is not a leader and has zero ability to inspire. I bet Bill would not vote for her if she was not his wife. Hillary, you fought a long and hard battle, but it's time to throw in the towel. Bye Bye Hillary.

Looks like Obama is in self destruction mode. I love it! His real character is finally coming out. I think he just put the final nail in his coffin.

Democrats - serioulsy - look at what your canidates are saying...We (the Government) need to do this and provide that - to and for the people. Also, look at where 90% of your canidates votes come from - big cities where everyone is relying on the government for handouts, welfare, etc. They're only setting the precedent for socialism. Once people realize they can just vote candidates in that will reward them gifts from the treasury - they'll only want more and more and demand they deserve more AND more! This is not what the USA was founded out - not even remotely!!!

Obama is going to WIN and Hillary will not be selected as his runnng mate. Hillary, don't let this go to the convention, it's not worth the damage that you will inflict on the democratic party. She is a jealous slob and not qualified for the position. Get out Hillary!!

Posted by: Democrat on Apr 14, 2008 at 12:11 AM
Pilsner please go away we are sick of hearing from you. Obama is now associated with a well know terorist. Sure everyone vote for him and then see how this country will end up. See he is not the Perfect Person we all thought he was. And to think I was going to vote for him. Now I will go with Hillary at least she seems to want to help the middle class and not just the lower and uneducated.

Posted by: Pilsner Location: Hillary's a Mosquito on Apr 13, 2008 at 07:42 PM
Voter and Sharon, Obama is not lying, he is very truthful. He used poor word choice a few times, but knew how to correct his blunders. Hillary often speaks with a fake southern accent and consistently lies. She is too emotional, week and moody to be commander in chief. I want her to drop out as soon as possible and get behind Obama. Obama needs her to get out of the way and support him in the general election. Obama, do not select Hillary as your running mate. Pick Richardson. It's obvious that Hillary is just a mosquito to the Demo party and needs to quit.

Posted by: Voter on Apr 13, 2008 at 03:54 PM
Pilsner you a an ignorant sexist pig. What is the matter you worried Hillary is eveything good these people are saying? Are you afraid our country will be better with a woman in office? Do you think Obama is not lying? Well you are sadly mistaken if you think he is a saint. I am sure there are skeletons in his closet which if he becomes President will come out like all the others. Get a life and stop cutting down everyone for their supporting Hillary. This is America and we ALL have the right to vote how we want. Reading all your comments on here you are a big joke.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 13, 2008 at 03:04 PM
Pilsner is bitter. I think Obama is bitter and that is why he goes to his church.

Posted by: Pilsner Location: Get lost Hillary on Apr 13, 2008 at 12:36 PM
Get out Hillary. You are hurting the democratic party. You have zero chance of winning the general election!!! Get behind Obama and provide support!!! I hate the way you have run your campaign. It went from hopeful to sheer comedy and blinding ignorance.

Posted by: Nancy Location: South Bend on Apr 12, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Hmmmm..haven't noticed any comments yet about Mr. Obama's crude remarks, which let us all know what he really thinks about the working class...."bitter, clining to guns and religion". HAH! And he used that "bitterness" as a REASON why we are upset about the illegals in this country. That's what we've got to look forward too if this joker makes it. It scares me, and I'm pretty fearless.

soldier boy....Please do not post ever again until you learn how to read/write. "there is no black people", "canadates", "democrates", "ingnorant" "obamaha"....totally pathetic. Get an education before calling other people ignorant and then learn how to spell it, fool!

Anon, no you are wrong. Hill Bill is originally from New York. Duh... I see you don't know much. Hillary is NOT ready to be commander in chief on day one, two, three, four or EVER!!!! If she got that call at 3 AM, she would be too busy either having and argument with her husband or a 3 some with Monica.

Hillary is a terrible candidate for numerous reasons. She shouldn't ever have a title beyond Former First Lady. She's terrible and so is her husband. As for McCain, I doubt he'll survive the presidency with how old he is. He's lucky to walk down the street without a walker. Go Obama.

Pilsner, here is a quote from Jeremiah Wright---The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people," he said in a 2003 sermon. "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.---You agree with that, huh?

Posted by: Pilsner Location: Iron my shirts on Apr 10, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Anon, there's a right wing conspiracy (just watch the Fox News Network) to put Hillary forward because they now she will never EVER beat the republican candidate in a general election. Also, Obama's pastor has a right to express his opinion and that doe not make him a racist or anti American. As I said before, he only pointed out that Hillary benefited from white privledge and would make an absolutely horrid President. I happen to agree.

Posted by: les Location: mishawaka on Apr 10, 2008 at 09:52 AM
As goes the mayor so goes the school board? use your vote where you can see it at work. so South Bend is for Obama and mishawaka is for Clintin, kind of like the old days with football ( washington V mishawaka) Meanwhile the country goes to hell in a handbasket. Do you really thing any of these canadites will bring even ONE new job to this area? There is no Washington, Lincoln, or even a Roosevelt in the running. Looks more like a Taft, Cleveland, or Ford term in office. At best they will just be a foot note in history. Just maybe we need to look for local officals. Who want to bring life back to this area, that is really the ?. The next president will have thier hands to full to worry about the South Bend V Mishawaka. Where did the jobs go anyway? I guess Ross Perot was right, I can still hear that sucking sound, and who signed the free trade act, I thing thier last name is Clintin. Does anyone remember soup lines? our kids will.

Hey SBCSC, so what are you saying.....its OK for politicians aka the best con artists since the ten cent circus are allowed only when the kids are not around? are you embarassed of those kids? the way youre teaching them , you should be. its obvious some day we will have a black president, and some day we will have a woman president, if you were a stiff shirt congressman just riding along till the pension kicks in, maybe hillary in one of her famous "moods" will shake them up, I wouldnt want to deal with her like that, as for Obama, will he talk this tough when his money runs out? if we dont like him now, give more power and see what happens...hopefully the next time I shake a politicians hand, Im putting a rope around my wrist....snakes wont cross rope........

Debbie, I agree with you. I grew up on South Bend's Northwest side. We did not know "color." We all were friends,no matter what race we were. I teach in a mixed school who's population is split just about evenly, black and white. I have often spoken to my students affectionately and proudly about my experiences in South Bend. After reading these forums, and the commentary, i am not so sure i can continue to be proud of where I grew up. What kind of an example are we setting?

Shame on you South Bend, and Washington School. The school board said one of their concerns, for not having Hilary was: No Politics. What happened! What goes for one should go for the other.

Posted by: Dave Location: Crumstown USA on Apr 9, 2008 at 06:10 PM
People wake up and open your eyes!!! whether this move was minority or racist motivated, the true measure of who is the minority is not measured by the number of people, its how aggresive a group is that determines their status, hence the more aggresive, the higher status, BUT violent, senseless acts bred from ignorance solves nothing, SBCSC should be glad obama asked to come there, it probably saved them money from damage at washington, I know because my kids go there, its a west side JJC, not a learning institution. with washingtons ISTEP score in the dumpster, kids that are always looking over their backs for trouble coming at them, cant look forward and concentrate on their studies, for me , this is the final straw, Ive seem what SBCSC moral fiber really is, AND PARENTS, there is such a thing as a transfer tuition form, let SBCSC pay for your childs education at a school that really wants to teach, when I was in school, the color chart stayed in art class, and colors were equal.

Posted by: Kim Location: South Bend on Apr 9, 2008 at 05:51 PM
"SO IT IS OK FOR OBAMA TO COME TO WASHINGTON, BUT WHEN SENATOR CLINTON WAS HERE, THEY DENIED HER REQUEST TO SPEAK!!!! HOW STUPID!!!! IT MAKES NO SENSE WHAT SO EVER." Really? That Hillary wanted to come during school hours and Obama during Spring Break makes no difference at all to you? Yeah, I'm sure the school board wanted to purposely create constroversy and make a political stance against Hillary when denying her request. Yeah, sure, that makes sense. Better sense than the school board denying Clinton's request because she wanted to come during school hours.

Jane, Rinna, I'm not going to China because Obama WILL be our next President. It won't happen, but if Hillary were elected (NOT!!), we are all going to be screwed, tattooed and sent off to hell in a little hand basket. I don't like Chelsea because she's ugly and does not make a concious and deliberate effort to think about the questions before responding. It is my business to know if infidelity is likely to hurt Hill in the general election. Hillary would never win in a general election against the republican candidate. She needs to just get her fat ankles out of Obama's way. I'm glad the SBCSC turned her down. At least somebody is thinking clearly. She can iron the superintendent's shirts for all I care. Hillary, get out. You are hurting the party!!!!

I don't care about the location controversy, because I think the school board was presented with the "very" unexpected, when Hillary wanted to come and they failed to think through the proposition thoroughly before responding. When presented with a second chance, they would have been foolish to deny our community this wonderful opportunity to have one of the next presidential candidates here for a rally. I am only sad that the debate has been over such a small venue... maybe the argument should have been over a location that could house at least 10-20K, so more of our community could have participated in this event.

Let me follow the reasoning of some of you. You ask your mom for some ice cream, right before dinner. Your mom says "no ice cream before dinner, you must not spoil your appetite." When dinner is over, your sister asks for ice cream and your mom says to her "Ok, you finished your meal.", and you respond, "mom, you shouldn't give her ice cream, because you didn't let me have any." Your mom points out to you... "That was before dinner because it would have spoiled your appetite." You turn and call blame this situation on your mom's gender bias. I think that about points out the silly nature of many of the arguements in this forum. Good day!

Posted by: Elizabeth Location: South Bend on Apr 9, 2008 at 04:38 PM
This is not a Race issue. This is a money issue. Whoever offered South Bend Schools the most dough were the ones who held the rally. Don't ya get it? It's all about the green backs.

Posted by: Rinna Location: Groton on Apr 9, 2008 at 04:36 PM
Pilsner, let me help you pack! Would you want someone to ask your child about their parents fidelity in a public forum? That has to be a bit humiliating don't you think? She gave the perfect answer, and all of us would probably answer the same way if posed with that question and no time to think of a response. How do you figure she has time to ponder a well thought out answer to a question like that? Give me a break.

Posted by: Debra Location: South Bend on Apr 9, 2008 at 04:31 PM
Since one candidate was told NO all of them should have been told no. The school board is not setting a good example for anyone, young or old. This isn't about who you want in office or what color you are. This is plainly just the difference between right and wrong. We all try to teach our children to be friends with everyone and treat everyone equally but this is NOT what the school board is teaching them. I agree with the statement that one person made and that is "why did it take a Presidential Candidate to come to WHS (or any school for that matter) to get them to replace light bulbs and clean up the area." Talk about safety for the kids. The school board needs to get back to the fundamentals of taking care of the kids and making school a safe and enjoyable experience instead of all the double standards. Regardless of the way things happened may those of you able to attend tonight enjoy the experience.

Grow up South Bend, and this is coming from a whiteman speaking on this .

Tricia, you are a racist. Obama will be the next President, so get used to this black man. Also, Hillary and her daughter are horrible. I wonder if she taught her daughter to respond to important questions with, "It's none of your business". What do you mean it's none of my business??? The public has a right to know. Your mommy is running for highest office and your daddy was the freakin former President. Any question about fidelity is valid and it's their responsibility to provide us with reasonable, well thought out answers and not just simply tell me it's none of my business. I hope Chelsea does not run for President when she grows up. If that happens, I'll move to China.

Yeah but the school in South Bend Indiana where he will be giving his speech doesn't want white people. Did you hear the school turned down Hillary last week but then Obama got wind of it and called and they agreed to have him? Yep, you guessed it...the school is predominately black. Now, that is uncalled for Obama. Pulled the race card again. Ridiculous...whatever their color or their Presidential preference, they took something historical and special from those children: the chance to meet a former First Lady, a U.S. Senator, and a potential Presidential candidate (not to mention the first woman running), Also they took away the chance to play a part in history that Indiana hasn't had a chance to in 40 years. This really makes me angry. Obama, is that your Black Liberation Theology at work? That you deserve perferntial treatment because you are black. What gall to wonder why there's stereotypes? You contribute to it and continue the racism.

It's a great thing that Senator Obama is coming to our to area. Let's embrace Him and stop all this hate talk about the school board members. Enjoy being part of history and getting a close look at our New President of The United States Of America. Let's be United.

Carolyn, it has been brought to my attention that Obama's mentor is a known racist. How is it that Obama doesn't share any of these feelings. I would like him if not for that FACT!

It's great that Obama got invited and not Hillary. Hillary stanks and needs to get out of the race. She is huring the democratic party. Every time I see her on tv I just have to hold my nose. OBAMA/RICHARDSON 08!!!!!

Man, you really need to take a shower after you come to WNDU's forums, don't you? Most responsible oraganizations moderate their comments. Evidently, WNDU is too lazy or they really do condone what gets said here.

Mr. Zimmerman is white. I think we all know who he, and the rest of the school board are endorsing and that's wrong, what is denied for one should have been denied for the other. I'm sure Mrs. Clinton wasn't afforded the opportunity to campaign after school hours, she was just told, "No!". It's not the safety of the students he's been worried about (like he said about Mrs. Clinton's visit) if he were worried he'd eat the cost of metal detectors! Secret Service Agents were all over the school, it would have been safe. The students have the right to hear ALL three of the canditates and then make their own choice instead of blindly following the crowd and that's exactly what so many people are doing for this election. Voting just because someone's a woman or because someone is black. That is wrong on so many levels. Use your brains, do research, listen closely to what they're saying and what they've said in the past and who they've been "fellowshipping" with.

It's funny how all the burnt out parking lot lights had to be replaced so they are in working condition when Obama comes tonight. Is there some reason why they could not of been done just because? I'm sure after sporting events and fans are going to their cars they would of liked to have walked thru a well lit parking lot also!

I am not promoting racism or anything of sort it is your SUPERINDENT who is. Like I said I am a Democrat and I would love to hear what Obama has to say and so should these kids as well as what Hillary says also lets invite McCain. These kids are going to vote for the first time. This man is nothing but a liar and RACIST. There is no school policy like I said otherwise why would he take a vote. But he did. He would have simply said NO! But wake up parents he is hurting your kids. Joan Raymond would have given everyone a fair shot. Government is Government white or Black. Democrat or Replubican. Zimmerman took that away. Now what do these Government teachers teach in schools that you have to be Black to be heard and be a man. Wrong message Zimmerman. I only hope you never apply to be superindent in Michigan. Someone from WNDU should look into his Racism!!!!!!

Can somebody at WNDU pretend to be a reporter and actually check if this "policy" in question is a written policy, and if so, exactly how it is worded? I know for most people posting here facts are a bit irrevalant, but just maybe there's a couple or so who actually care about the truth.

zimmerman is an idiot an im glad i dont go to south bend schools. dont say it makes a difference whether the campaign is held during school hours or over spring break. Government is a required class for seniors to take to graduate; what does he think a presidential candidate is part of: GOVERNMENT. it is a good learning experience for the students to be a part of our presidential election. Zimmerman should have said yes to hillary, but since he said no, he should have said no to Obama, no excuses.

I liked it better when the nom, ination was already decided before it was Indiana's primary. Now we have to listen to all the TV ads and see all the articles that our local paper see's fit to print, mostly about Obama. It's no wonder that all the tickets went so fast for this speech, according to everything you read around here Obama can do no wrong. Be careful of the change he wants to give you it might not be good change.

go ahead all you poor blind sheep, follow your self proclaimed, bigot, racist canidate who has spent the last 20 years promoting hate and bigotry in his church, follow him to slaughter, unfortunately it will be the ingnorant who vote for him thinking he will give out more free stuff to them, and not expect them to work for it. for us working stiffs, it's continue on supporting the lazy good for nothings, and pay all of the taxes so they can have more welfare checks every 9 months. Pretty soon there will be no tax base in St. Joe county, only welfare receipients and politicians. Won't that be nice. Perhaps the bleeding heart liberals will show their true colors tonight, it will be a reason to start looting and rioting, but it wont be their fault, probably the fault of the republicans.

I do not think this is a racial issue -- I think it is SBCSC trying to save face from the aftermath of Hillarys visit. It just made SBCSC look worse

Posted by: ANDY Location: MISHAWAKA on Apr 9, 2008 at 11:18 AM
I AGREE AND IT SHAMEFUL THAT HILLARY DIDN'T GET TO SPEAK AT WHS SHE WAS DENIED WAS IT BECAUSE SHE WHITE AND OBAMA IS BLACK AND THE SCHOOL BAORD IS BLACK EVEN THE PRINCIPAL IS BLACK TOO THAT IS RACISM ASHAME ON YOU PEOPLE IHAVE 4 KIDS DAM IF I LET THEM GO TO WHS.

Posted by: Z Location: Indiana on Apr 9, 2008 at 11:16 AM
The SB School Board made the right decision in both cases. Stop whining and get over it. There is a huge difference between doing this at night and during school hours.

Posted by: MICHELLE Location: SOUTH BEND on Apr 9, 2008 at 11:16 AM

good point Jane. WNDU should do some investigative reporting on when the actual purchase went in for the printing of the tickets.

This is all been so stupid it makes me ill. Mr Zimmerman is nothing but a racist PIG. His claim that it is policy not to have a politican during school is policy is a bunch of bull. If it was policy he would have just stated it was policy but it TOOK a vote of the school board member to see if they agreed to have Hillary speak there. THAT is not school policy. He is LIAR. This has everything to do with teaching. This is government which is taught as a SENIOR in order to GRADUATE. But instead of letting these Seniors her what she had to say he made the decision himself and said NO. But here comes OBAMA and now he says yes. I am a Democrat and there is nothing wrong with Obama but lets be far. My point is Zimmerman did not do what was right he hurt the kids that are going to be first time voters all because he is a racist . Where is our Governor who preaches that our schools lack in teaching our kids if this is not an example what is. Joan Raymond would have done better for your kids....

Posted by: carrie Location: SB on Apr 9, 2008 at 10:31 AM
This isn't a racial issue! It's a issue dealing with our double standard school baord! They quote one policy and then bend it and brake it until it works to their advantage! MAKE UP YOUR MIND SBCSC! The same rules should apply to every situation! Thanks once again to Mr Snaidecki for thinking of the one thing that really matters in all of this, the childern. He seems to be the only one on the board of idiots that remebers that what they do affects the generations of tomorrow! To all the rest of you shame on you! If you wanted to teach the kids a lesson YOU JUST DID! You taught them that the people in charge of their education are liars and manipulators. That was a great thing to show them!

This comment is to Andy that posted yesterday at 7:16 PM. It is very foolish for you to say something that we support someone who lies. As far as I am concern, all politicians lie just to get your vote, male or female. So get over your male egotistical self!

What was everyone thinking from SBCSC school board to Obama going to Washington school at 10pm. This could be dangerous and with all the people being upset the possibility of a riot starting. Have the decision makers forgotten about the strong presence of KKK in our area (Osceola). I feel that he could have gone any place in South Bend and Obama needs to take ownership of the mess also, he could have said no. I just changed my vote to Hilary.

Posted by: Democrat Location: South Bend on Apr 9, 2008 at 09:29 AM
Isn't it funny how the SBCSC Board Members forgot to mention that political events could take place after school hours when Hillary Clinton came to town?! Didn't Dr. Zimmerman say, "Absolutely NO political campaigns can take place in any South Bend School." Oh and one more...Don't we have political campaigns for the school board members, and we also have public voting occurring in our public schools. Just some issues to ponder.

Posted by: Jane Location: South Bend on Apr 9, 2008 at 09:18 AM
Come on people! Do you really see what is going on? This event was planned well in advance to Hillary arriving! Don't you see? I would bet that there was already a contract between Obama's camp and SBSC in regards to no other candidates using this venue. This explains the flip flopping of the administration. Do you really think that his people would even think to approach SBSC after what happened with another Democratic candidate? I don't think so. This was planned well out in advance. And as far as these "tickets", what a sham. I was at the downtown office twice yesterday (8am & 11:30am), after finding the real address after the wrong one was published. They were conveniently sold out. Of course they threw a few hundred to John Q. Public for media attention. I'm sure they were distributed well in advance. This whole thing is deceptive. I was at Hillary's rally, despite all of the chaos with SBSC it was a well organized rally. Nobody was left behind. Everyone who wanted to attend did.

Posted by: Washington Parent Location: South Bend on Apr 9, 2008 at 09:16 AM
Vicky is right, Mr. McCollough didn't make this decision. He's a good principal. It was the school board trying to make things right (a little too late). And yes, I believe they are showing who they stand for. Racism isn't just shown by whites, it's equal opportunity. I'm not for Clinton and I'm not for Obama but I do think they should have BOTH been allowed to come to our great school! It's too late for Clinton and since she wasn't allowed then Obama shouldn't be allowed either, send him to Mishawaka, SBCSC you should have been denied this opportunity!

Posted by: GR Location: Mi on Apr 9, 2008 at 09:12 AM
I am from Michigan and from where I stand after reading everything, Dr.Zimmerman made a wise choice. Do not disrupt the young people from learning because of politics. As for the time of this rally that even caught me off guard.Maybe that is the only time he could come, who knows. I really think the three that are running ,should be put on "Are You Smarter Then A Fifth Grader."There they can't fill your heads with lies and promises.Whoever gets the most money gets President, second most money V.P.and third Speaker of the House. This way you know it is fair. No hanging chads and whatever else went on the last time. Good Luck ,South Bend, your citizens are still in the 50's and 60's, with all this Black and White issues.God help you all.

It's amazing to me when people like Rodney make such IGNORANT comments without taking a REAL look at the situation at hand. Did we have to be in the board meeting to get a real grasp on the decision made...NO! You look at the results. You never listen to a mans words to determine his worth, you look at his actions and the results they give. They could have said anything in there and it wouldn't matter, the end result is you have a community split in two by the poor, racist and sexist decisions of a few. It doesn't matter what their reasons were, you have a white woman who was not allowed to speak at a primarily black school. You have a black man who was given the go ahead. So Rodney, you and others like you, can not only go to your room, but while you are there pack your bags and get out of our country. It's people like yourself and the board members that make this country a worse place to live. And also the reason why we'll NEVER have racial togetherness!

I would pull my children out of that school if I they went there. The school board might be white but they need the black votes so they are going to do whatever it take to get them. I would not live on that side of town its ghetto! It can never be a race issue if your white but blacks sure use it all the time. Go back where you came from where you all what to say your roots are.

Posted by: Vicky Location: South Bend on Apr 9, 2008 at 08:31 AM
Pat, please, this was not a decision made by WHS, it was made by the school board. WHS was fully prepared and excited to welcome Hillary Clinton to speak at their school, until the school board put a stop to it. I am not exactly sure why the SBCSC school board has now decided that it is okay to have a political event in the schools and I am hoping to soon see a statement from Dr. Zimmerman.

Posted by: Kevin Location: Mudcatville on Apr 9, 2008 at 08:21 AM
Well said, Rodney from Goshen. Everyone thinks that they have the answer. Everything is racially motivated, or so they think. Um, is not the majority of the school board white? Somehow all of these conspiracy theories just don't add up to a thinking adult such as myself.

Posted by: Jen Location: Granger on Apr 9, 2008 at 08:11 AM
The original decision to deny Hillary was shameful. I agree that this was a discriminatory action. Especially now allowing Obama to come there. The school is still the students domain on spring break.

Hang on to your vehicles, purses and wallets, funny, same goes if you vote for barack (real name barry)houssain obama. Might want to bring a flack jacket with you tonight too.

Posted by: Myrtle Location: Niles on Apr 9, 2008 at 07:55 AM
I personally do not believe that race had anything to do with their decision. I think the powers that be caught so much flack from their first decision, they thought by allowing Obama to come to Washington School would make them look better. Obviously it didn't work.

When will the voters of America WAKE Up, This is "POLITICS" at its finest. What the AMERICAN VOTERS should do is kick all the Incumbants and Career Politicians out on their lazy butts and put some Honest Hardworking Citizens in office. People that know what it is to work 10 to 16 hrs a day to make ends meet. Then we the citizens would see these outrages price increase's stop. Face it our politicians do nothing to stop the high price of gas, because they more than likely are filling their pockets from the dividens they are making off their oil stocks. Look at the Dollars they spend to get elected, Political Offices today are BOUGHT Not WON ! IF you think I am wrong look at what OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS have done for us in the last 20 yrs, Wars, Soaring Prices, Lousy Health Benefits, Jobs Outsourced, and a Goverment that has lost all respect in a lot of the countrys of the world! We as citizens hear everyday not to look at people by their color, but from what that person has to contribute to society. now you allow one person the come to washington and not another, that will only ensue to the students that racial equality means nothing. that is why I as a parent WILL NOT have my two children going to washington next year, ther are clearly better local learning institutions around, and I hope south bend school officials are this open minded come school board election time. there is no way you can preach racial equality when you pull one sided tricks like this. when the students strat fighting over this, AND THEY WILL, they do now, south bend , stand back and relish the fruits of your one sided labor.

South Bend School Board allowing Obama to use Washington School is it politics or a black and white situation

Posted by: Dustin Location: Mishawaka on Apr 9, 2008 at 01:33 AM
Those who see this as a racial issue are projecting your own fears or feelings, in my opinion. Instead of injecting race into this specific situation, why not welcome Sen. Obama and his supporters to our community? Take a look at the reasons given for this event's approval and contrast them with the reasons given for turning down the Clinton visit. The major sin committed here was a failure by the superintendent and school board to issue a consistent and clear message about each decision. Information was allowed out in dribs and drabs which allowed speculation, rumor and innuendo to take hold. When Dr. Martin Luther King went to Cicero Illinois he said that he ran into racism more virulent and deep seated than any he saw in the deep south. We do not want Sen. Obama, or anyone else, to see South Bend as an intolerant city. We are better than that, no matter who you support. If you support Sen. Clinton you will need Obama's supporters to win in the fall and vice versa.

Shame on the South Bend School board. Did they forget they also did not want to appear as if they were endorsing any candidate. This stinks of racism. They need to contact Hillary and ask her to speak in the evening or they should offer both candidates to have a debate and they could have there debate team ask questions of both candidates. What a learning experience that would be for the students.

YOU CHEATED YOUR STUDENTS OUT OF A GREAT EXPERIENCE AND FURTHER SUBJECTED THEM TO YOUR POLITICS. YOU SHOULD BE RUN OUT OF TOWN ON A RAIL ALONG WITH YOUR OTHER SEXIST CRONIES LIKE PRINCIPAL TODD WEIDEMANN. IF THE PUBLIC ONLY KNEW HOW YOU RUN YOUR HOUSE. I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST OBAMA, HOWEVER I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE OPENED YOUR DOORS TO MRS. CLINTON. IT IS YOUR PROCESS AND MOTIVES THAT ARE QUESTIONABLE. WHAT IS IT TELLING OUR CHILDREN? IT IS PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND TODD WEIDEMANN THAT DRAW THE LINES OF RACISM, GENDER BIAS AND PREJUDICE. NEITHER OF YOU SHOULD BE IN CHARGE OF CHILDREN. It makes me sick to see Obama welcomed while our former first lady and current US Senator was denied the opportunity to speak at SBSC. It seems like the administation should have said yes to both canidates or none. It makes the administration seem biased to Obama and many will believe it is because of race. The administration has set a bad example for the students and should resign.

I am shocked and appalled at the virulent racism and hate exhibited on this message board. It is abundantly clear the pointy white hood segment of the population that has besmirched this area for many years is alive and well. This matter is nothing more than a case of organizational dysfunction and campaign effectiveness. Organizational dysfunction is exemplified both through the South Bend Community School Corporation and the Clinton Campaign. In contrast the Obama Campaign is an example of effectiveness and guile. This episode is simply a microcosm of the entire campaign. Attributing this matter to reverse racism is ignorant and stupid.

Posted by: Rodney Location: Goshen on Apr 8, 2008 at 08:02 PM
You guys talk like you were there when it happened. This racial speculation is a major contributor to the fuel that perpetuates hate. You made up your mind and you're sure you're right. You were in the room when the decisions were made, right? You know the SBCSC superintendent personally, right? That's what I thought. Now go to your room.

It is not right and boos to WHS and attaboys to MHS. Someone please make some send out of the racial issue. Because it has become one.

I do not think it is right for the school to let obamba there and would not let clinton, that means the school and school board is looking for trouble that is like raceiem, it is not fair I am ashame to be part of this community. It does not matter if school is in or not they should of had clinton there it would of did the kids good. This school does not do to good anyway in watching the kids if they let kids bring guns to school.

Posted by: Beth Location: Fort Wayne on Apr 8, 2008 at 06:52 PM
Reverse discrimination. Pure and simple. Washington High School should extent a personal invitation and an apology to Hillary. Spring break has nothing to do with Washington's not allowing Hillary to speak at the high school. Evidently, bigatry comes in all colors.

Posted by: Jenni Location: Mishawaka on Apr 8, 2008 at 06:17 PM
I don't think that Obama should be allowed to speak at Washington because Hillary wasn't. They try not to make this issue about race, but what meassage does this send? Black candidate, primarily black side of town, and the white candidate wasn't allowed to speak there. It smacks of racial preference.

Posted by: at Location: south bend on Apr 8, 2008 at 06:09 PM
I think that the school board is damed if the let Obama come tomorrow night and damed if they don't. they should have played fair and not got let either canidate come.

Posted by: Linda on Apr 8, 2008 at 06:05 PM
Shame on SBCS for allowing Obama to speak at Washington High School. Clinton was not allowed to speak due to the fact that no political activities were to be held at schools in the corporation. Now it is being said that she could not speak, and Obama can, due to the fact that it will not disrupt the school day. Get your story straight! Allow the kids, and the community, to hear from both candidates or don't allow either one to speak!

Posted by: Mike Location: South bend on Apr 8, 2008 at 06:05 PM
I am sure that if Hilary Clinton wanted to come back and speak at the school during spring break that she would be welcomed with open arms and not because of the controversy of refusing her request the first time.
