A fire at the Indianapolis zoo today killed several animals.
The fire burned part of the zoo's “Encounter Exhibit,” an area used for school visits.
Zoo officials say an armadillo, some small birds, turtles, and a snake died in the fire.
A veterinarian treated the surviving animals.
Officials say the fire began in the Critter Corner building before 4:30 a.m.
Sprinklers extinguished the flames in 35 minutes.
No word yet on what caused the blaze.
The zoo says the Critter Corner will remain closed for the time being, but the rest of the zoo is open.
