Indiana Senator Evan Bayh is calling for the government to step up efforts to fight global counterfeiting.
Bayh testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier today.
The senator is drawing attention to problems caused by piracy and counterfeiting around the world.
Bayh reports that American businesses lose 250-billion dollars each year due to counterfeiting.
About 750,000 jobs have been lost in the U.S. alone.
Bayh says more needs to be done to protect American jobs and consumers.
He wants to establish a task force to track and identify people who steal intellectual property.
“American workers, businesses, and taxpayers have the right to expect that we will take more of a leadership role in the face of a serious problem affecting our national economy and so many of our constituents,” said Senator Bayh (D) Indiana.
China is responsible for 80% of the world's counterfeiting and piracy.
