A group of retired soldiers wants the Indianapolis airport renamed again for World War I hero H. Weir Cook.

The airport was once named for Cook but was changed to the Indianapolis International Airport in the 1970s. Retired officers have gathered nearly 1,000 signatures supporting the change back to Cook's name. They plan to take their case to city leaders later this year.

Cook shot down seven German planes as a pilot during World War I. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with an oak leaf cluster and the French Croix de Guerre.

He was killed in a 1943 plane crash after volunteering for World War II. Indianapolis named its airport after him in 1944.

In the 1970s, the name was changed when leaders were trying to build a big-city reputation for Indianapolis.
