One of the biggest names in Warsaw, Ind. is relocating part of its operations. Zimmer announced Wednesday that it will be moving its distribution center to Memphis, Tenn.

A representative for the company said the move will enable Zimmer to do more same-day shipping of its product and fill more last minute surgical orders.

But, while the move makes the company's distribution efforts more efficient, it leaves some of the employees wondering if they will still have jobs once the move is complete.

“We made the announcement early as the goal is to eventually re-assign as many employees as possible,” said Garry Clark, director of public relations for Zimmer.

The transition to Memphis is not expected to begin until fall 2012.

“We remain committed to Warsaw and our Warsaw headquarters,” Clark said.

But, when Zimmer employees walked into work Wednesday they got some news they did not expect.

“We announced a part of our ongoing part of our transformation program,” Clark said.“

The nearly 300,000 square foot distribution center in Warsaw will no longer be used in the same capacity. The company is now deciding how to keep the workers employed while still making these changes.

But despite such a goal, news of the move to Memphis left some employees worried about their futures at Zimmer.

“I think there's inevitably disappointment when there is any disruption,” Clark said. “Of course, some employees will be impacted in not continuing with the company.”

Clark said there are no current plans to relocate any other functions of the company.

Zimmer officials have not yet discussed where exactly employees will be reassigned to but it will all depend on each worker's skill set, according to Clark.

Distribution centers did not want to appear on camera but tell Newscenter 16 that their jobs are their livelihood and they hope to be re-assigned.
