In 2006, then Notre Dame safety Tom Zbikowski made his pro boxing debut with a 49-second TKO win over Robert Bell at Madison Square Garden.
Five years later, the current Baltimore Raven is returning to the Boxing ring.
Zibby will fight Richard Bryant Saturday night in Las Vegas on the undercard of Mayorga-Cotto on Showtime Pay Per View. The event costs $55 and and starts at 9pm.
"I've been itching to get back in the ring for a long time, since a day or two after the Madison Square Garden fight," Zbikowski said Thursday in an interview with NewsCenter 16. "It's Just something I've been working for and toward for five years."
Zbikowski just finished the football season in January, but says he's got two of the best trainers around. He says he got a good 5-6 weeks of training in.
"I'm two days away from the fight--I better be ready," Zibby said with a laugh. "If not, I'm in big trouble."
Unless of course he's planning to knockout Richard Bryant in 49 seconds like he did to Robert Bell back in 2006.
"Yeah... That might happen," Zibby said. "I'd like for it to go as long as possible but you really can't get greedy in the boxing ring because you are always one punch away from being on the other end of it. So I'm going to go in strong and whatever happens happens."
Zibby said the pre-fight staredown with Bell didn't work out too well. He said he's not exactly the type that can be forced to staredown his opponent. He said he just broke out into a laugh and so did Bell.
The former Irish safety says he plans to fight more in the future and hopes to develop a good nickname at some point. Tommy Z is apparently out of the mix, according to Zbikowski.
And perhaps one of those future fights could be against Chad Ocho Cinco. The Bengals wideout and Zbikowski have been trading tweets and talking smack this week and Zbikowski wants to make it happen.
The current labor dispute has made this a better fit but Zbikowski says the fight would have happened either way.
