Three bicyclists were struck and killed early Thursday morning in Elkhart County in two separate accidents.
The first accident happened on County Road 17 and the U.S. 20 bypass at 3:35 a.m.
The bicyclist, Raymundo Macjado Sabag, 60, was riding southbound on the west side of County Road 17. The vehicle was also traveling southbound, hit the bicyclist and left the scene.
"[It] appears that he was very well lit and should have been visible to vehicle traffic," said Undersheriff Sean Holmes.
Deputies announced they located a "suspect vehicle" late in the afternoon, but did not say if anyone was inside. Sabag's family declined to comment on the advice of an attorney.
Around 5:50 a.m. two more bicyclists were hit.
Daniel Snead, 42, of Elkhart, was driving westbound on County Road 20 and hit two men riding in the opposite direction.
David Anglemyer, 18, of Goshen, died at the scene. Daniel Runion, 19, of Osceola, was airlifted to Memorial Hospital where he died a few hours later. Neither wore helmets or other safety gear.
Runion's mother told NewsCenter 16 the boys were like brothers. They usually slept during the day and spent their nights working on repairing cars and bikes.
On Thursday they spent the night at Runion's home in Osceola and then decided to go to Anglemyer's home in Goshen. They were offered a ride in a car, but decided to ride their bikes because Anglemyer had a new bicycle. Runion's mother said the teens had just purchased flashing lights for their bikes before making the trip. She added they frequently rode their bikes to the store and around the area.
"It's very unfortunate. I don't like to get those phone calls, especially when somebody passes away and then to have two in one morning, it's just tragic and unfortunate," said Holmes.
