"That's truly sad. It's kind of outraging to think that somebody would stoop that low to take something from a family, especially the families in our area that go back and forth to Riley Children's Hospital and try to take care of their sick children," said Lt. Tim Williams of the Mishawaka Police Dept.
Last week, the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department warned of two men who had taken the Children's Miracle Network displays from three Walmart stores. Deputies reported one man got out of a two-door, brown Chrysler car with a Michigan plate with C-H-Y ran into the store and stole the displays, while another waited in the car and opened the door when the first suspect returned. The Sheriff's Department did not provide an image of the suspects.
Last Thursday, two men went into the Walmart on Indian Ridge Blvd. in Mishawaka and stole a red wagon that holds donations for Riley Hospital for Children. Police are also searching for two women who posed as shoppers.
"That money allows that parent to take time off work to take their child down, it pays for things like gas and food for them to be able to eat and be with their child in the time of need. To have people like this just take it, it makes you sick," said Williams.
On Monday, two men stole a Children's Miracle Network collection display from the Walmart on Ireland Road. Police did not release surveillance pictures of the suspects because of a lack of quality. Witnesses described the getaway car as a red Ford Taurus with Indiana plates containing "2001".
Police are unsure if all of the crimes are being committed by the same people and hope witnesses come forward with information that can help lead to an arrest.
"I wish that the individuals that are doing this would put themselves in the shoes of the parents of that sick child and think about how they would feel if that money was taken from them so they can take the day off work to be with their child," said Williams.
Walmart declined an on camera interview with NewsCenter 16, but said all area stores have been told to be on the look out and will make a contribution to both Riley Hospital for Children and Children's Miracle Network.
“Our stores have made arrangements to donate an equal or greater amount than the estimated value of the cash inside the collection display," said Walmart spokesperson Kayla Whaling in a prepared statement.
