A John Young Middle School teacher was injured Monday morning while trying to break up a fight between two 8th grade girls.
Patricia Schutts, a science teacher, told police around 8:30 a.m. she heard screaming and yelling in a hallway and found two 8th grade girls arguing. She then asked them to stop and move along, but one girl followed the other into a classroom and the two continued arguing.
Schutts reported she again tried to get them to stop, but one 14-year-old girl charged at the other. Schutts said she tried to stop her, but the 14-year-old being charged at instead hit the teacher.
Schutts then stumbled backwards into a trash can where she told police the girls got onto a fight on top of her.
"The victim states that while on the floor, she was hit, kicked and her hair was pulled (by the suspects). She also thinks a desk was knocked on top of her. Victim also states that both suspects appeared to mutually engage in the fight," read a police report taken of the incident.
The fight was finally broken up when another teacher entered the room and was able to get the girls to stop fighting. A third teacher had gone to get help and also witnessed most of the fight.
Schutts was treated at an area clinic for a swollen right eye and cheek.
There was no indication what provoked the fight.
School City of Mishawaka administrators did not return a call from NewsCenter 16 requesting an interview.
