A Berrien County home invasion suspect is dead after a police pursuit that ended in a shooting near the state line Monday afternoon.

An undercover Berrien County officer fired several shots at the suspect, hitting him at least once in the hand, in front of a home in the 19000 block of Wedgewood Drive around 3:30 p.m.

It all started when officers recognized the suspect at hotel along 31 North.

“He is wanted out of Berrien county on a felony warrant,” said Tim Corbett, commander of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide unit. “He is a suspect in several home invasions and considered armed and dangerous.”

Police started following him and, when the suspect noticed, he parked at the Pay ‘N Pakit on 933. He then walked from the parking lot to 19450 Wedgewood Drive, where he appeared to try to enter the home.

That’s when an undercover officer confronted him.

“He pulled a weapon on an undercover police officer and, in fact, cut the officer in the hand and the officer discharged his weapon several times, striking the suspect,” Corbett said.

Police don’t know how many shots hit the suspect, just that he was shot in the hand.

Even after that, the suspect continued to fight with police before being transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he later died.

The shooting caused quite a commotion in the neighborhood; several residents came outside of their homes as soon as they heard the gunshots.

“I was taking a nap when I heard about five gunshots and I got up and started looking around,” said neighbor Ronald Cornelis, Sr. “It makes you nervous, you never know.”

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department and St. Joseph County Metro Homicide were all initially on the scene.

An autopsy on the suspect could be performed as early as Tuesday.

The name of the suspect isn’t being released until all family members are contacted. Police aren’t releasing the name of the Berrien County officer who was injured during the incident either.
