While NFL legends spent the night walking down the red carpet in Indy, many of their Michiana fans spent the evening walking down supermarket aisles.

Stores were packed with people stocking up on goodies to get them through Sunday’s game. And for many folks, the excitement is about more than just football.

“It’s been pretty busy,” said Martin’s Supermarket Deli Clerk Daniel Weimer. “With the Super Bowl coming up everyone doesn’t want to go home and cook. So they come here and get a quick and easy meal.”

For some folks that meant picking up premade subs and sandwiches, for others it meant getting ingredients to make their own feast.

“We're going to be making guacamole, not the store bought variety,” said Granger resident Melissa Paulsen. “And [my daughter]’s going to make her brown sugar pie.”

Several shelves of beer at Martin’s in Granger were getting low because of the Super Bowl rush, so distributors came in Saturday night to stock the store for some fans’ favorite football treat.

“Good old cold beer, that's my pick,” Weimer said.

From customized cookies to cookie cakes, there were plenty of themed treats to tickle any fan’s fancy.

But the real question is, without a Midwestern team in the game this year, who are Hoosiers rooting for?

“Considering we’re from the East Coast, from New England, we’re really excited for the Patriots to be playing,” Paulsen said.

Others say they won’t be too focused on the teams this year.

“I’m rooting for the commercials,” Weimer said. “My team didn’t make it this year.”

Of course, it’s not all about who wins or loses for some folks. The true beauty of Super Bowl Sunday lies in the tradition.

Whether you’re a fan of the commercials, the quarterbacks or the queso, it’s a day that brings families and friends together.

“We’ll put friends first, food second and then maybe the commercials,” Paulsen said.
