The Indiana county singled out by President Barack Obama as a symbol of the recession's impact is seeing signs of recovery, but many residents say it's a slow climb.

Elkhart County has seen its unemployment rate fall from nearly 19 percent in 2009 to 12.2 percent in January. That's good news for some, but aid groups say the numbers don't tell the whole story.

A community volunteer center that offers free clothes and food to those in need saw the number of meals it serves each month double to about 400 last August. Executive director Ed Swartley says he doesn't expect this year to be any better.

David Schrock-Shenk of Elkhart County Works Together says many people are close to the edge nearly two years after the recession's official end.
