A recent spike in break-in attempts in a South Bend neighborhood has left neighbors on high alert.
In the past week, at least six Bercliff Estates residents said that someone has attempted to break into their homes or cars – a few attempts successful.
When neighbors head to the curb these days on timber lane ... They're checking for more than just mail.
"It's heightened our paranoia a bit," said Danielle Mazick.
The entire neighborhood is on the lookout for anything or anyone suspicious as many have had an unwelcome guest.
"I opened the door and I could tell it looked like there was a crack on the door, so it looked like someone had attempted to break-in," said Jacob Chandler.
The very thought that someone was in scrounging around their belongs has left some residents uneasy. For every unsuccessful attempt, the culprits have successfully broken into someone else's house or car and stolen appliances, electronics and one man's wallet.
One of the street lights that lines the road is out also, hindering any attempts for neighbors to catch anyone suspicious lurking about.
Police are still searching for suspects and anyone with information should call the South Bend Police Department or Michiana CrimeStoppers at (574) 228-STOP.
