The woman shot by her estranged husband Monday morning has died at a Fort Wayne Hospital.
According to the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office, Luselva Saavedra, 35, of Milford died from a single gunshot wound after Ruben Saavedra shot her inside a local convenience station.
Around 5:38 a.m., Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to Katie’s Kwik Mart in the 100-block of N. Main Street in Leesburg.
Witnesses told detectives Luselva ran into the store from a vehicle while frantically asking for help from a clerk. She then ducked behind a secure service counter as Ruben entered the business brandishing a handgun. Because he couldn’t get behind the enclosed area, Ruben fired one round from his handgun, hitting his former lover in the shoulder and fleeing from the store in a red pickup truck.
Only minutes later, a Warsaw police officer spotted Ruben’s vehicle at the north end of an empty parking lot on the Warsaw Ivy Tech campus near the intersection of U.S. 30 and Silveus Crossing. As officer’s approached the vehicle, they discovered the driver had shot and killed himself with a gunshot wound to the head.
A gas station clerk who saw Ruben shoot Luselva said she did all she could to save the woman.
"I got a bad feeling, like I need to help this woman so I called 911. As soon as I locked the door, he tried to open the door. I went to grab my mace and my keys and go in the back with the telephone and call 911. The next thing I know, there was a shot that went off and I smelled smoke. She fell to the ground and the cops arrived,” store clerk Amber Hawthorne said.
Police say the Saavedra’s were divorced, but lived in adjacent mobile homes in the 300-block of N. East Street in Milford.
Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the argument and subsequent shooting. Ivy Tech's campus was closed Monday until 12 p.m.
