The LaPorte County Corner says alcohol and thick fog played a factor in a crash that killed a LaPorte man Thursday morning.
The accident happened on U.S. 421 in Westville near County Road 125 around 4:00 a.m. eastern. A northbound semi truck and southbound pickup truck collided head on.
41-year-old Jeffrey Koza was driving a pickup truck and was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma. His blood alcohol level was .226.
The semi driver was uninjured.
Shortly before the accident the sheriff's department took a phone call about a pickup truck driving in the wrong direction on the highway. Police say Koza nearly struck several vehicles while driving the wrong way on the highway, and an officer was dispatched to pull him over. The officer did not get to Koza on the highway before he hit the semi head on.
Officials say there was very heavy fog and light rain in the area at the time of the crash.
