The federal government has issued new dietary health guidelines that call for big changes in the amount of sodium you take in each day.

The recommendations for how much fat, cholesterol, and fiber we should consume haven't changed much since the 2005 guidelines were issued.

However the 2010 guidelines do recommend you reduce your sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams a day. Those who are 51 years of age and older, African Americans, and anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease are told to take in no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium daily.

These recommendations were listed as only suggestions in 2005.

It's also recommended that you take in at least two and a half cups of fruits and vegetables per day and take in 14 grams of fiber per day, per 1,000 calories.

The federal government is also making a push to get you to take less vitamin supplements, and get more vitamins from the food you eat.
