New regulations took effect Thursday, which mandate airlines include taxes and fees before advertising fares.
"It's a good thing. For the first time airlines are going to have to be truthful in their advertising," said Tom Edgerton, owner of Edgerton's Travel. "They [Passengers] bite on these misleading prices and then when they actually go to make the purchase they find that it's a lot more than they were anticipating and of course everything is non-refundable."
Several airlines are challenging the law. Opponents of the new regulation argue it treats airlines different than other businesses that do not have to include taxes in advertised prices.
"The price advertised in the paper for a used car is a far cry from what you end up paying," said John Schalliol, executive director of South Bend Regional Airport. "People are used to dealing on the internet I think by now. They should be used to just checking more carefully once again, it's taking responsibility for your actions and we don't seem to want to do that."
The regulation does not apply to baggage fees, seat assignment fees or other fees where a passenger can opt-in.
"The airlines, they could solve all this if they would raise the prices by $50. If you had to pay $50 that would not deter you from making the trip, but with $50 more the airlines could be profitable," said Edgerton.
Meanwhile it seems ancillary fees for a flight will stick around.
"There are so few seats going out of most airports today and the demand for those seats is incredibly high. It’s a seller’s market at this point and they're going to take advantage of that," said Schalliol.
Since ticket fees and taxes vary by airline and destination it is tough to put a cost on how much more the price of a ticket will appear when searching.
