It was a route he took a few times a week but on Sunday an avid biker from South Bend died when a car accidentally hit him. It happened along State Road 23 just south of the mall. Neighbors say they recognized the biker, 62-year-old Steven Carey.

“I've seen him before riding along this road,” says neighbor Jessica Jeans. “He never rides on the sidewalk. He rides in the road.”

He typically rides his bike along the busy road a few times a week. The driver, 22-year-old Amy Miller says she didn't see the biker.

Neighbors say he always rides with traffic and follows the law. Both were driving north along State Road 23 when the accident happened. The biker hit the car's windshield and was thrown about 150 feet.

The biker lived in a South Bend apartment building across town. It's not clear where he was headed. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.

No word on whether the driver was distracted.
