A New York man is in custody in the Kosciusko County Jail after stealing more than $9,000 from a Leesburg resident’s tax return.
Recently the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to a house on Barbee Lake. A woman complained that she was unable to file her tax return online. She told officers that she attempted to use Turbo Tax but was informed by the IRS that her return had already been filed.
The Sheriff’s department investigated the case and confirmed that the returned had been filed by a suspect in Staten Island, New York. Detectives and officers from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department travelled to Staten Island and met with the NYPD. The suspects was then located at his residence and arrested.
Nihal Walter Rodrigo, 39, faces preliminary charges of felony forgery. Rodrigo waived extradition and was transported back to Indiana and is being on a $75,000 bond.
Meantime paperwork is currently being obtained by to search Rodrigo’s computer for other potential victims.
