South Bend Police say an 18-year-old man was shot in the lower back at the corner of W. Sample St. and Camden St. around 7:15 p.m. Sunday.
The teen told investigators he was walking down an ally with his friends when he heard a "pop" and fell to the ground. His friends ran away before a gunman checked the victim's pockets and stole $100 in cash.
The victim told officers he did not see the gunman and had no idea why anyone would want to harm him. Police say his story is not lining-up.
Paramedics transported the man to a local hospital where he underwent surgery around 10 p.m. Sunday. He is expected to survive.
