Long Beach man facing charges in wife's shooting death

A Long Beach man is facing charges after his wife was found shot to death earlier this week.

It happened just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 2900 block of Lothair Way, near Long Beach Country Club. When officers arrived, they discovered Stacey Larkin, 41, dead inside the home.

According to the Times of Northwest Indiana, her husband, John Larkin, 47, was initially taken into police custody for questioning, but has since been charged with voluntary manslaughter.

LaPorte County Prosecutor Bob Szilagyi said it appears the couple was fighting when the shooting occurred. The woman had reportedly taken a gun out of a safe in their home, and her husband was trying to get the weapon away from her when it went off.

Szilagyi said evidence indicates Larkin did not intend to kill his wife, but did so "during sudden heat," which, under Indiana law, qualifies as voluntary manslaughter.

Larkin could face up to 50 years in prison.
