Kari's Crusade - A young mother's battle with breast cancer
Font Size:

We have a brave young mother and two passionate Michiana doctors to thank for an Emmy we brought home from the 53rd Annual Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards last night.

A Special Maureen's Medical Moment called Kari's Crusade won an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement for News Speciality Report/Series-Health Science. Kari Hazelbaker was just 35 when she discovered breast cancer.

She allowed me, along with Chief Photojournalist Don Schoenfeld, to follow her ordeal from diagnosis through surgery which included immediate implants after her double mastectomy.

We are happy to report Kari is doing great six months later. Our thanks to Dr.'s Ronald Downs and Michael Rotkis for allowing our cameras into the OR to chronicle this breakthrough surgery.
