Should Indiana lighten up on people who light up?

That was the question posed to members of the Indiana Senate Judiciary Committee this morning.

SB 347, authored by Sen. Karen Tallian, (D) Portage calls for decreasing the penalties for the possession of marijuana.

Under the terms of the bill, Possession of Marijuana would be treated as a Class C infraction if the amount was less than three ounces. If the amount possessed was more than three ounces, the offense would be a Class B misdemeanor.

Testimony on the bill indicates that passage of the bill would free up an estimated 250-prison beds and save the state $7.5 million.

While the bill received a hearing in committee today, there was no vote. That made it extremely unlikely that the bill would advance during this session of the Indiana General Assembly.
