An Indiana woman died in a fatal crash in Miami County Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on state Road 19 west Miami County Road 300 East.

Officials say Cassandra S. Hovis, 30, of Peru, IN, was driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla southbound on State Road 19. For an unknown reason, the Toyota crossed the center line and struck, head on, a northbound 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by Adam W. Starkey, 34, of Peru, IN. Both drivers had to be extracted from their vehicles.

Starkey was flown from the scene of the accident by Samaritan Helicopter to Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne, IN. He suffered severe leg injuries. Hovis was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash.

Starkey was wearing a seat belt which Trooper Bowyer believes helped reduce the severity of his injuries. Hovis was not wearing a seat belt.

State Road 19 was closed for about two hours during the crash investigation and cleanup.
