If you have unused pills or liquid medicine just sitting around the house, you can safely get rid of them in St. Joseph County on Wednesday.

TRIAD of St. Joseph County is holding a pill drop from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the county jail parking lot on the corner of Sample and Lafayette in South Bend or the Mishawaka Police Department in the 200 block of North Church St.

One of the greatest harms from flushing pills down toilets or sinks is that those pills can make their way into the water table and ground water. Turning your pills in will also get them out of your cabinet for another safety reason. Prescription drugs are the number one abused drug among our youth.

Expired medications can lose their effect anyway after time, so clearing them out is the only option left.

In 2009, TRIAD was able to gather nearly 2,000 pounds of pills during their annual drive in St. Joseph County.
