Getting to the beach was hard for some folks after an accident shut down a portion of M-139 in Berrien County Sunday night.
It happened just after 6 p.m. in Oronoko Township. Newscenter 16 was the only crew on the scene.
Police say a man was driving Southbound when he crossed the center line of the road and fish-tailed, Hitting an oncoming SUV.
The driver of the red car fled on foot into the nearby woods before police arrived. They called in a K-9 unit to help track him down.
The driver of the other vehicle suffered only minor neck and back pain.
“Well my first thought, I talked out loud. I can remember that,” said Robert Little, driver of the SUV. “I was saying oh no, I'm going to go in the other lane and hurt somebody. Praise god it didn't happen. So we're ok.”
Friends say the driver of the red car had been drinking at the beach all day.
Police are still investigating what caused the crash.
