Dozens of blinking lights from fire trucks lit up the night sky on State Road 933 in St. Joseph county Saturday night, as crews tried to figure out where all the smoke came from.

The heavy smoke came from a building in the US 31 supply complex. Firefighters said that while it used to be a plumbing store, it is now empty.

Officials said the smoke most likely drifted into the building from a neighbor burning wood outside, which, firefighters would like to remind everyone, is illegal to do at night.

Ian Faigh, a neighbor said, "First thing I noticed when I pulled up is you can really smell the fire somewhere, definitely wood burning and from a couple blocks away even."

Dave Cherrone, Clay Fire Territory Fire Marshal, said, "It is a wood-frame building so some areas are protected. Some areas aren't. We have a basement. We have upper levels. So it is a pretty complicated building to do a very quick search."

While crews were inside the building, they noticed the electrical box was smoking, completely unrelated to the other smoke. Officials said, it is a good thing they found it because there is a chance that could have turned into another fire.
