SB Allegiant Airlines flight arrives in Florida, following emergency landing

An Allegiant Airlines flight from South Bend, headed to Punta Gorda, Fla., has finally arrived after it made an emergency landing Friday.

Flight 959 departed at 12:25 p.m. EST from the South Bend Regional Airport.

It was due into Punta Gorda at 3:19 p.m. EST, but made the emergency landing in Fort Wayne at 1:21 p.m. EST, after an indicator light came on warning of a fire in the cargo hold.

"It was like the plane was falling from the sky," said passenger Katie French. "[Passengers were told to] put your hands by your side and go limp at impact."

While early reports from the airline said there was a fire in the cargo area, officials with Allegiant now say the fire chief at the airport has told them there were no flames aboard the MD-80 aircraft.

Those aboard deplaned via the emergency slides at Fort Wayne International. Allegiant says there are no injuries as far as they know.

There were 149 passengers and five crew members aboard the plane.

"Like any normal functioning human being I was very afraid," said one passenger.

The passengers were able to board another flight bound for Punta Gorda around 1:30 a.m. EST Saturday, and finally arrived safely around 4:00 a.m. EST.
