Roughly 40 cattle were loose near North Liberty after a semi-trailer tipped over Tuesday morning.
At around 11:15, the semi, which was double stacked with cattle, rolled over, allowing many of the 101 cows inside to escape.
It took police on horseback several hours to catch all of the calves, which have been taken to a local farm.
Ten calves died from the crash, three had to be euthanized because of their injuries.
Police say the driver of the semi-trailer suffered minor injuries. Witnesses say he appeared to be driving at the posted speed during the accident.
Police say the man was taking the cattle to Kansas. When he came to the three-mile curve on 23 near North Liberty. The combination of the sharp curve and strong winds caused the trailer to tip over, trapping some of the cattle.
