Construction on one of the busiest ways to get in and out of downtown South Bend begins Wednesday morning.
Cracks were found on the Michigan Street bridge last June. Two lanes closed for a short time, but the bridge re-opened.
Crews are starting work to repair those cracks. The bridge will stay open to at least one lane of traffic throughout construction, but long delays, especially during rush hour are expected.
East Northshore Drive and West Northshore Drive at the intersection with State Road 933 will be closed during the project.
The closures and restrictions will stay in place until the project is completed in September.
At least one sidewalk will stay open on the bridge for pedestrian traffic during the Leeper Park Art Fair on Saturday and Sunday.
