A seven-year-old boy was shot in his forearm late Thursday night after someone fired approximately six bullets through the window of his home. His mother was also injured by flying glass or by debris while tending to the child.
It happened in the 1100-block of East Madison St. shortly before 10:30 p.m. Police say the suspect was on foot and fired intenionally at the home.
Natasha McFarland, who lives just behind the home, had just gone to bed when the incident occured.
"I had just closed my eyes, opened my eyes again and shots were fired," McFarland said. "Jumped right up out of my bed and by the time we got to the door, there was nothing out there but cops."
She has been concerned about the house for a while. McFarland said she contacted police about a shooting at 1140 East Madison last summer.
"It's not the first time," she said. "Even before we knew that the house was involved in the shooting...we knew the house was involved in the shooting,"
But, she noticed something different in the shooting Thursday.
"It was so loud and it seemed like more intentional," McFarland said.
The home was built by Habitat for Humanity for Janitta Hairston a few years ago. Neighbors tell Newscenter 16 that Hairston had four children and four foster children when she first moved in.
Four other children were in the home at the time of the shooting and were seen exiting the home in tears, but uninjured, before leaving with family members to go to the hospital.
The boy was transported by ambulance in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. His mother was transported separately by ambulance and is also expected to make a full recovery. Both were released from the hospital Friday.
Police did not have a usable description of a suspect or vehicle immediately following the shooting.
