St. Joseph County Metro Homicide arrested two people in connection with a homicide Friday evening.
Police say around 5:30 p.m., 51-year-old Mack Caldwell of Mishawaka, was shot and killed inside a house in the 1000 block of East Bowman.
“I just heard one of the individuals say something about how he was from Chicago, looked over and saw a pistol in his hand,” said Angela Turner, who owns the home. “I grabbed my son and I knew something bad was going to happen. Next thing I know, I heard a gunshot.”
16-year-old Rayterrior Wheeler of South Bend has been charged with murder.
Police also arrested 18-year-old Herbert Brown III. Brown is charged with assisting a criminal.
Turner says neither she nor Caldwell knew the teens; they were invited to the house by one of Turner’s friends.
“He still ain't speaking to the police, ain't speaking to no one,” Turner said. “And, it's still on him. It was his friends that came. [Caldwell] happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Turner says she’s relieved her 3-year-old son wasn't hurt during the incident. He was just a few feet away when the shooting happened.
“He just thinks a balloon that popped, it was a really loud noise,” Turner said. “He didn't really see much. I picked him up so fast and smashed him up to try and cuddle him and hide him.”
Turner’s lived in her home for more than 30 years, but says she’s now considering moving.
It would mean breaking a promise to her late mother, who asked Turner never to sell the house.
“I’m about ready to say to hell with the neighborhood and put up a for sale sign and leave,” she said. “I can’t raise my son in this environment.”
