A 62-year-old man is dead after being hit by a car along a busy stretch of State Road 23 late Sunday morning. Monday morning, that man was identified.

The bicyclist was identified as Steven Carey of South Bend.

During the investigation, the driver of the car was identified as 22-year-old Amy Miller of South Bend.

Traffic was blocked for two hours between State Road 23 and Douglas Road and the Toll Road underpass near the University Park Mall.

The accident happened in the 16,900 block of State Road 23 around 11:00 a.m. Sunday. Police say a four door Chevy sedan hit Carey with such force that the bike's frame became stuck in the front of the car. Upon impact, Carey was thrown from the bicycle and struck the windshield.

The St. Joseph County crash reconstruction team led the investigation.

According to St. Joseph County Police, the car's driver told officers she didn’t see Carey until hitting him.

Several witnesses at the scene stated that they didn't see Carey until the impact with Miller's vehicle.

Miller wasn't injured, however, paramedics later transported her to a local hospital for anxiety issues following the crash.
