The Berrien County Sheriff's Department has released the name of a teenager arrested for allegedly shooting her Berrien County boyfriend to death.
At 3:24 a.m. Tuesday, a frantic 9-1-1 call led police to a home in the 5400-block of Shanghai Road, in a rural portion of Pipestone Township.
Inside, officers found David Wayne Quinn Jr., 21, shot and killed, at the hands of Destiny Cougar Coulson, 16, of Berrien Springs. Coulson was later taken into police custody and charged with 2nd Degree Homicide and Felony-Firearm.
At 4p.m. Wednesday, Coulson and her attorney appeared via video teleconference during her preliminary hearing in Family Court at the Berrien County Courthouse in St. Joseph. Following suggestion from the county prosecutor, Attorney Referee Steven Flood set Coulson’s bond at $500,000, a sum only payable by her mother.
The prosecutor's office also filed a motion to waive Coulson into adult court for trial. The decision was made because of the severity of the crime and because Coulson is just two months away from turning 17.
Crime techs from Berrien County and Michigan State Police’s Forensic Science Division spent nearly 12 hours combing the scene and processing evidence. Then around 12:30 p.m., paramedics wheeled Quinn’s covered body to an ambulance bound for a local morgue.
"He was a nice young man; he’d always offer to help. I always paid him, but he was always very gracious, saying I didn’t have to. Too bad, it really is,” Quinn’s neighbor Hank Breyen said.
According to a local realtor, the Quinn family home recently went into foreclosure. In fact, it's currently featured on multiple real estate websites as an active listing.
Neighbors say the victim’s parents, David and Karen Quinn, had recently moved-out of the house. However, it's still unclear as to why their 21-year-old son was inside the vacant home early Tuesday morning.
"I feel very bad for David and I know he's gone now, but mom and dad are just going to be beside themselves. It's terrible,” neighbor Pat Breyen commented.
Friends say the Quinn family had lived in the home for more than 15 years. Little did they know the foreclosure notice was just the start to a series of tragic events.
"It’s horrible; you just don't bury your kids. Kids bury mom and dad, it's just the way it is,” Hank Breyen added.
"It’s going to be different around here for awhile; it's not going to be the same. I'm going to look up at that house now and know exactly what went on up there and know that there was a killing up there. It’s just very heartbreaking,” Pat Breyen concluded.
According to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, bullet wounds indicate Coulson shot Quinn once in the face with a shotgun found inside the home. Police interviews further indicate the couple had been drinking and arguing prior to the incident.
Initially investigators told NewsCenter 16 deputies had taken two individuals in for questioning; one found inside the home, another picked-up at a nearby address. Yet at last check, authorities had not arrested the second person.
The homicide remains under investigation. Coulson’s next court appearance will be on Feb. 10 at 4 p.m. inside Family Court at the Berrien County Courthouse in St. Joseph.
