Alcohol suspected in downtown Dowagiac car crash

A Dowagiac man is in the hospital after police say he crashed his car, possibly while driving drunk.

Around 1:50 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a one-vehicle accident along Chestnut St., near S. Front St. in downtown Dowagiac. There police found Ulises Munoz, 30, injured inside his car, which had hit a tree head on.

A handful of witnesses told police they heard the wreck, but aside from the driver, no one saw it happen.

Despite working air bags and a properly worn seat belt, Munoz was taken to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital, just six blocks away, for minor injuries.

Investigators believe Munoz was intoxicated and are considering alcohol a primary factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
