The Department of Energy finalized a nearly $50 million loan to The Vehicle Production Group.

That money will go to support production of the MV-1. It is a wheelchair-accessible, six-passenger vehicle that will run on compressed natural gas – and no gasoline. Essentially, it’s a taxi designed to serve the disabled community.

The MV-1 will be produced at the Mishawaka AM General plant.

Eighty-four workers that were recently laid off at the plant will be rehired with this funding. More jobs could also be created in Indiana as a result of the project.

“This investment will both put people back to work and, once completed, will serve Americans with disabilities. Also, by fueling these vehicles with compressed natural gas, we’re taking an important step toward lessening our dependence on foreign oil,” said Congressman Joe Donnelly, in a release issued Thursday.

The Vehicle Production Group estimates that, at full capacity, the project could produce over 22,000 vehicles each year.
