Etta was found in the streets of a Las Vegas suburb when a veterinarian discovered it had come from South Bend.
Pet Refuge adopted Etta to a family that later moved to Henderson where a woman found her being tormented by some local children.
"A lady had found her in Henderson, Nevada and took her to her vet and the vet scanned her and she had a microchip that belonged to Pet Refuge," said Pam Comer, President of Pet Refuge.
The chip came back to the animal shelter because the family never updated a special identification chip placed inside Etta.
"Have your pets micro-chipped so that if they are lost they have a way of getting back home," Comer recommended.
The Las Vegas veterinarian contacted Pet Refuge and agreed to hold Etta for a few days until she could be returned to South Bend with a staff member who happened to be vacationing nearby.
"Kelly was going on vacation to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah and of course we call Kelly up and say 'hey, Kelly, would you mind if a Kitty hitched a ride back home with you from vacation," said Comer.
Etta returned to Pet Refuge's foster care, where workers hoped she would be reunited with her family.
"We did try to contact the numbers that they gave us at the time of adoption, but unfortunately they'd been disconnected, but we'll continue to work on it because our goal is to find her home," said Comer.
Pet Refuge was unable to find Etta's original family, but only hours after arriving at the shelter, she was adopted. Her new family found her at an adoption event on Saturday morning.
