Tanning salons feel burn by tanning tax

Tanning salon owners say they are getting burned by a new tanning tax.

Starting in July tanning customers will likely have to pay ten percent more to tan.

Salon owners predict tanners will cut back on services. As a result salons fear they will be forced to lay off employees.

At Fun Tan they employee a total of 40 people and the owner says they will likely have to let some people go from the salon.

Originally cosmetic surgery was also included but the tax was lifted after heavy lobbying.

Tanning salons say they are being unfairly targeted.

“It’s huge. Think about the total revenue and having to write a check for ten percent of everything you make and give it to the federal government. That is tough.. plus on top of all of the taxes we are already paying today,” says Fun Tan owner Dan Skwarcan.

This tax is expected to help fund health care reform by 2.7 billion dollars over ten years.

Spray tans will not be taxed since they are u-v free.
