He's accused of robbing about a dozen banks over the last several months, and now the man known as the "quiet" robber is behind bars.

The most recent robberies were Tuesday in Warsaw and Wednesday in Valparaiso. That's where 35 year-old Joseph Campbell of Elkhart was caught in his vehicle after leaving the scene. Police say he later confessed to robbing several banks in Indiana and Michigan.

It's been a mystery at the LaPorte Police Department for months since a National City Bank was robbed.

Sergeant Paul Brettin says the detective assigned to the case has been waiting to see the person responsible behind bars. “Every week he'd say ‘this is driving me crazy.’ He'd review video and it would be the same guy he believed all the time.”

That's because several police agencies have been trying to track the robber down.

Brettin says, “Ours we believe was the first one he hit and that was July 25, 2009. He would go in and he would wait in line and he'd pass a note, never was a weapon was shown.”

People in the city of LaPorte were relieved to hear Campbell is in custody and feared any potential run-ins, weapon or not.

Shannon Wiencek says, “I probably would've passed out. It's absolutely ridiculous. I mean the economy is horrible, but there's other people that do other things besides rob banks. I think it's ridiculous.”

People who work at cash registers in Plymouth also think it’s ridiculous.

Police there believe Campbell is responsible for robbing a 1st Source Bank on December 4, 2009.

Sue Wickens says, “Lots of people around, lots of security, and he still got away. It's very frightening. I'm very glad they caught him, but I think people are very desperate right now and they're going to do anything.”

Police agree. That's why they're working with banks to prepare employees for anything.

The FBI is also investigating the case and Campbell will be prosecuted by the US Attorney's office.
