It started out as a family-fun event, singing country music.
Now, a Mishawaka mom has made her way to Country Music Television.
On Friday night, Betsy Williams' family and friends will join her to watch CMT’s "Singing Bee" to find out if she's a winner.
This all happened on a whim. On Friday nights, Williams would watch "Singing Bee" with her four children. She felt confident in her ability to memorize the lyrics, so she decided, “I'm going to go for it.” Well, she did it and it got her a spot on the show.
Her five-year-old daughter, Lucy sang her out, “we were poor, but we had love. That's the one thing dad made sure of,” proving she would get her shot in the spotlight for singing someday.
Right now, her mom is taking center stage, but Betsy admits most of the finalists are actually horrible singers. “That's the whole premise of the show, you don't have to sing it well, you have to sing it right.”
The family has a love of country music. They were ecstatic when Betsy got invited to an audition in Chicago. Then, she was selected to be on the show in Los Angeles.
Betsy says, “They would play parts of the song and stop the tape and you would have to write the rest if the line. After we did the whole test they sent us way and graded the all and whoever did well they took further along.”
Her oldest daughter, Gracie couldn't believe it. “When we got into the car and she told us, I was so excited for her.”
Betsy credits her success to her family and of course, her little superstar singer.
“When she told me what song I had to sing, I was shocked.”
It was the song she sings every morning with Lucy.
The show was filmed in November. There are six people including Betsy. Only one will walk away the winner.
You can actually join Betsy and her family on Friday at 9 p.m. at Villa Macri Restaurant at Toscana Park in Granger. Country Music Television will be on in a section of the restaurant.
