An Edwardsburg man faces up to life in prison for alleged sex crimes against children.

Allen Hershberger is being held in the Cass County Jail. Bond has been set at $150-thousand.

Hershberger faces a total of seven counts of criminal sexual conduct with a child under the age of 13.

"The three most serious (charges) involve his own children and I think that's important to note," said Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz. "This isn't a situation where individuals are being plucked up off the street, or occurring at the school yard, things of that sort."

It is alleged that all the crimes took place at the Hershberger home on Oak Street in Ontwa Township between May of 2008, and mid January of this year.

"Each of these are potential capital offense cases," said Fitz. "If convicted as charged, the defendant does face a minimum of 25-years in prison."

Hershberger was apparently active on some computer social networking sites where he was sometimes pictured with his children, and where he frequently made mention of his kids.

"I have four wonderful kids that I don't see as much as I need to," he wrote on one site.

On the same page, Hershberger has a link to a country music song about child abuse called "Allysa Lies."

Hershberger's computer activities are now being closely examined by the F.B.I.

"In this type of charge there is a examination as to whether computers are involved and so forth," said Prosecutor Fitz. "In this case, there is some evidence regarding computer activity and the FBI does have certain forensic experts that assist in that regard."

Hershberger waived his right to appear at a preliminary hearing scheduled for today in Cass County.

In doing so, he spared a five year old child from having to testify in court.
