An Illinois woman is dead after she slid her car off I-94 in New Buffalo Township into a pond.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says 75-year-old Tulayasook Srisangud of Wilmette, Illinois was driving on the highway just east of the state line when her car slid off the south side into the pond at the Michigan Welcome Center.
A LaPorte County deputy and New Buffalo Township firemen were able to put on cold water rescue suits and pull Srisangud out of the pond, but ambulance personnel were unable to revive her. No one else was in the car at the time.
Police say it was snowing lightly at the time of the crash and that conditions on I-94 were icy in patches along the third lane, but the cause remains under investigation.
