A group of local pawn shops are adding some music to the Boys and Girls Club of South Bend.

As part of a nationwide campaign, Tom Howard of Worldwide Jewelry and Pawn donated band instruments to the Boys and Girls Club so more kids will have the chance to foster a love of music.

The director of the boys and girls club says the arts help give kids hope and inspiration.

“I can remember as a youth my mother gave me a guitar for Christmas, a bass for Christmas, and I played that bass all day long. It kept me out of trouble, I always had inspiration to be a musician,” Ron Lawrence of the Boys and Girls Club said.

The National Pawnbrokers Association picked December 6 as Musical Instrument Gift Day in honor of the patron saint of pawnbroking St. Nicholas.
