After plenty of talk on how to use hotel-motel tax dollars, a vote is just around the corner.

Tuesday night, in a committee meeting, St. Joe County leaders decide to send it to the full council without recommendation.

We know for sure the College Football Hall of Fame is leaving the area, but we don't know exactly when. So, the council did amend that portion of the language to indicate that if the hall is open, then funds will go to them on a pro-rated basis.

Not everyone agrees on what's considered the best way to promote tourism. County Commissioner Dave Thomas proposed using the money to help fund various museums, the Potawatomi Zoo, Coveleski Stadium, and the biggest chunk going to the County Parks Department.

People from the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the Hotel Motel Tax Board say that's not what this money is intended for.

Mark Dobson, President of the St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce says, “We can never diminish how they are to the community, but to promote tourism, it's a bit of a different venue and that's the convention stuff that comes to the community. That's the people who come to the hall. That's the Studebaker Driver's Club that comes back to this community and are taking hotel rooms."

Dave Thomas says, "In its current form, it pretty much locks the money up for the Football Hall of Fame, the Century Center and Convention and Visitor's Bureau, which is nice these people have jobs, and it's nice to pay the bonds on the Century Center but they're not the only tourist attraction in this county."

People from the local hotel industry showed up in support of the current proposal. County Commissioner Dave Thomas is hopeful things could change after next Tuesday’s public hearing at 7 p.m.
