The allegations are shocking—if they’re true. A South Bend home invasion and robbery began with a young child knocking at the victim’s door.
“Who would suspect that a young child would be part of a home invasion plot?” asked South Bend Police Department Capt. Phil Trent.
The case has been full of surprises for police. Late today investigators learned that the alleged victim of the crime faces criminal charges connected to a bank robbery in Kosciusko County.
20 year old Joshua Amburgey bonded out of the Kosciusko County Jail in September. Amburgey was arrested after he voluntarily surrendered to police.
Amburgey faces charges of aiding, abetting, and inducing a felony in connection with a June bank robbery at the Lake City Bank branch in Silver Lake.
23 year old Virgil Justin Smith was charged with the actual bank robbery.
This week, Amburgey said he was at his home on East Corby Boulevard in South Bend when he heard a knock at the door.
“Went to his door, found a child claiming to be collecting money for a church,” said Capt. Trent. “When he (Amburgey) opened the door a little bit wider, two adult males forced their way into the residence and robbed him.”
Capt. Trent says that one of the intruders had a gun, and that both demanded Amburgey’s I.D., A.T.M. cards, and his cell phone.
Only after police questioned Amburgey did they learn of his pending criminal charges in Kosciusko County.
