The St. Joseph County metro homicide unit is turning to the public for help hunting down the suspect in a drive-by shooting.

24-year-old Luis Briones would face four felony charges in connection to a shooting on the west side of South Bend last Tuesday night.

Metro homicide originally thought he'd fled when they brought the charges against him last Thursday.

But now they believe he's in town, and are asking for the community's help.

In the meantime, family members say the 18-year-old victim of the shooting is still hanging on to his life, after being shot in the back of the head.

Delvon Davidson's sisters say the shooting last week was a true shock.

“He doesn't want to be out in the street fighting and arguing and shooting. He didn’t want that… so it doesn't make sense,” said Yvonda Davidson.

“He's not a typical teenager, where he's in to this and in to that,” said Yolanda Davidson, the oldest of 8 brothers and sisters. Delvon is the second to the youngest.

Police say Delvon likely knew Luis Briones.

“But as far as any kind of real friendship or an in-depth conversation, we haven’t been able to prove or disprove that,” said Commander Tim Corbett with metro homicide.

They’ve issued a warrant for Briones’ arrest on four felonies, including attempted murder.

They say he was intending to kill someone, but they can't say whether Davidson was the target at this point in the investigation.

There was also a 16-year-old in the same car.

“It’s a barbaric, cowardly act. That’s what it boils down to and Briones, I don’t want to call him Mr. Briones, Briones needs to be taken off the streets,” Corbett said.

Meantime, Davidson’s family has practically been living at the hospital since Tuesday.

“He needs as much prayers and as much support as possible and we want to keep him here as long as possible,” LaShaunda Davidson said.

The family's being told Delvon won't walk, talk, eat, or even breathe on his own ever again. They say his temperature's gotten as high as 107, and he’s also been fighting pneumonia.

They’d planned to pull him off life support over the weekend, after seeing how much pain he was in, and believing he’d indicated that was his wish.

“On Saturday I let him see the paper. I said, ‘They got a nice picture of you in the paper,’ so he looked at the picture. I saw him smile, and I saw his eyes read the headline, ‘Family is going to pull life support,’ and then his eyebrows shot up, he was like what?” Yolanda Davidson said.

Yolanda said that really made it clear to Delvon what was happening, and after showing improvement that day, he mouthed the words "I want to live,"

They granted his request, and his condition's improved ever since.

“Every time I go into his room he tells me to let him live or help him live,” Yvonda Davidson said.

Delvon’s sisters also say he may have been able to feel a nurse touching his chest Sunday. They're thinking about calling in a specialist to see if he has a better chance of recovery than originally thought.

Meantime, Delvon’s sister-in-law says that from the outside looking in, it will be especially tough for the tight-knit family moving forward.

“I look at them and want to cry more than when I look at Delvon, because if he does go he has peace, and I feel like they don’t yet. Not yet at least,” Sanjuana Tijerina said.

While the family hopes Briones is caught, their attention is elsewhere right now.

“I'd rather have my little brother back than have justice and day,” LaShaunda Davidson said.

Police do believe Briones is in the area, and are asking anyone with information to call metro homicide or crime stoppers.

They also say you shouldn't put yourself at risk; Briones should be considered dangerous.
