These days many adults in Michiana are going back to school to learn new skills to meet the demands of the job market.
That's why parents and educators are encouraging high school students to think before they make that big choice on where to go to school and what to major in.
Monday, over 60 schools participated in college night at Lake Michigan College. The goal was to let prospective students know that now more than ever, proper planning is critical.
Choosing a college and a major could mean the difference of success or failure in tough economic times.
Howard Poole from Purdue University says, “If they can decide in high school what they want to do, even start taking pre-college courses before they go there, advanced placement type of courses, community college courses, then they're in better shape of getting through and getting a job.”
Lake Michigan College employees found certain fields are in high demand in the Wolverine state.
Cathy Reuss says, “Any of the healthcare fields, hospitality, advanced manufacturing, and skilled trades.”
This was frustrating for Lexie Rydleski to hear as she had hopes of being a broadcaster.
She says, “I ultimately want a job after college, so if something is in high demand I guess I could check out.”
Two sisters we talked to who are already in college and looking to switch gears say their minds are made up. Beverly and Elva Whaley say their choices are fashion design and something involving business and art.
Elva says, “Money isn't everything, go for what you want to do and you'll be happy.”
Beverly says, “Yeah, that's my goal, to be happy. I love designing and I love sewing.”
Financial aid advisors on hand said you absolutely have to meet your deadlines for financial aid and scholarships. If there's a school you're interested in, call to confirm that deadline, especially now with the state cutting funds.
Also, there are more Pell Grants being given out now than in the past.
Pell Grants are the most common type of federal aid.
